Calea zacatechichi is a perennial shrub, grow to a height of 3 meter. Native to Northern South America and Mexico.
Calea zacatechichi cultivation is not so easy. Sow the seeds in a pot with the soil. Do not cover the seeds, moist the seeds with water and cover with a plastic bag. This small greenhouse needs from 5 to 6 hours of light to germination. If the seeds dry during this period, the plants will not germinate.
Used by the Chontal indians of Mexico as a hallucinogen. Its dried leaves are used before sleep to increase dreaming. They boil the fresh leaves into a very bitter hot water extract, which they consume, followed by a smoke of dried leaves of the same plant, to induce visionary and dreamlike states. The human dose for psychoactive purposes is a handful of the dried plant.
