Kat, an evergreen tree, it grows to a height of 20m, but is usually kept as a manageable shrub in cultivation. A native of North East Africa, it prefers well drained soils in a sunny position, and is drought and frost tender.

Propagation is by seed. The seeds may be sown in pots filled with compost or seeding mix. The pots should be kept moist in a well-lit warm area. Catha edulis, a wonderful houseplant in a location that gets some sunlight.

The traditional way to consume khat is to pick a bit leaves of a young shoot and to chew them slowly. Khat chewing is an old tradition of the Afro - Arabian culture and the use has been well described in east Africa and in Yemen. In the traditional khat-use areas, shoot are harvested and the fresh leaves chewed within 24 hours. This produces energy and endurance to the user and freeing from hunger and fatigue during strenuous work.
