Lactuca virosa is native to South Europe, naturalized in southern North America. This annual or biennial plant grows to a height of 30-150cm.

Propagation is by seed. Easy to grow. Sow seed in spring directly where it is to grow.

The whole plant is rich in a milky juice which contains opiate-like alkaloids.
